Konstrukcj\u0119 umieszczono na wysoko\u015bci 45 m n.p.m. Sk\u0142ada si\u0119 ona z 38 \u015bluz, dziesi\u0119ciu most\u00f3w i czterech akwedukt\u00f3w. Autorem projektu by\u0142 Thomas Telford. W prawie 2\/3 d\u0142ugo\u015bci kana\u0142u wykorzystano jeziora: Loch Ness, Loch Oich oraz Loch Lochy.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Kana\u0142 umo\u017cliwia\u0142 bezpieczn\u0105 \u017ceglug\u0119 przez Szkocj\u0119 \u2013 statki nie musia\u0142y ju\u017c przep\u0142ywa\u0107 du\u017co bardziej zdradzieckiej trasy rozci\u0105gaj\u0105cej si\u0119 na p\u00f3\u0142nocy kraju. Nierzadko trafia\u0142o si\u0119 tam na sztormy oraz francuskich pirat\u00f3w.<\/p>\n\n<p>Nied\u0142ugo po otwarciu kana\u0142u zacz\u0119to budowa\u0107 du\u017ce parowce.
