Hvis fiender angrep, ville de finne det vanskelig \u00e5 f\u00e5 tilgang og som oftest ville de kun stjele noen dyr og g\u00e5 videre. Hvis det var en st\u00f8rre styrke, ville gangbroen bli brent slik at fienden ikke fikk tilgang i det hele tatt.    <\/p>\n\n<p>Det finnes en rekke crannogs i Skottland, og flere har blitt unders\u00f8kt av arkeologer som har funnet trekull fra nedsenkede gangbroer \u2013 noe som viser at dette er en taktikk som har blitt brukt ved flere anledninger.<\/p>\n\n<p>Da Caledoniakanalen ble bygget, ble vanniv\u00e5et hevet med to meter.
