Hij gebruikte de grot als schuilplaats.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Als overlevende van de Slag bij Culloden, was hij vastberaden om de bevelhebber van de Redcoats, de Hertog van Cumberland, te vermoorden, als wraak voor de nederlaag van zijn clangenoten in de veldslag.<\/p>\n\n<p>Terwijl hij hem opwachtte, zag hij zijn kans toen de hertog en zijn troepen toevallig langskwamen. Gorrie zijn donderbus zat vol kogels en spijkers. Hij bleef uit het zicht terwijl hij de hertog opwachtte tot hij binnen bereik was.   <\/p>\n\n<p>Helaas voor Gorrie was het een slecht schot en miste hij zijn doel. Hij begon onmiddelijk zijn vlucht terug naar de grot en werd achtervolgd door de Redcoat soldaten die hem uit het zicht verloren in de hei.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Door het eten en de voorraden die zijn vrouw en andere dorpsbewoners hem brachten lukte het hem om een aantal maanden verborgen te blijven in de grot.
