All\u2019inizio del XX secolo, uno dei monaci di Fort Augustus ha utilizzato una vecchia muta per studiarne la costruzione, che \u00e8 risultata essere principalmente di alberi incrociati che formano le fondamenta. <\/p>\n\n<p>Fu costruita come struttura difensiva. Alcuni Pitti costruirono case su isole con passerelle per l\u2019accesso alla spiaggia. Non solo offrivano protezione dagli animali selvatici e un facile accesso alla pesca, ma erano anche molto facili da difendere. Se un nemico attaccava, in primo luogo avrebbe trovato difficolt\u00e0 ad accedervi e, nella maggior parte dei casi, avrebbe solo rubato degli animali e sarebbe andato via. Se, invece, l\u2019attacco era pi\u00f9 forte, la passerella poteva venire bruciata per impedire l\u2019accesso dei nemici.    <\/p>\n\n<p>Esistono molte isole artificiali in Scozia e diverse sono state studiate dagli archeologi che hanno trovato carbone lungo la linea delle passerelle sommerse, dimostrando che questa tattica \u00e8 stata utilizzata in diverse occasioni.<\/p>\n\n<p>Quando fu costruito il canale di Caledonia, il livello dell\u2019acqua sal\u00ec di due metri.
