L\u2019ing\u00e9nieur de construction \u00e9tait Thomas Telford. Presque les deux tiers de la longueur du canal sont form\u00e9s naturellement par le Loch Ness, le Loch Oich et le Loch Lochy.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 construit pour fournir un passage sans danger \u00e0 travers l\u2019\u00c9cosse permettant aux navires d\u2019\u00e9viter la route plus dangereuse qui contournait le nord de l\u2019\u00c9cosse et qui \u00e9tait plus vuln\u00e9rable aux temp\u00eates et aux corsaires fran\u00e7ais.<\/p>\n\n<p>Peu de temps apr\u00e8s son ouverture, la construction de navires \u00e0 vapeur plus grands eut pour cons\u00e9quence de limiter son utilit\u00e9 et il aurait pu \u00eatre oblig\u00e9 de fermer. Il surv\u00e9cut \u00e0 cette tentative de fermeture et \u00e0 plusieurs autres tentatives, dont la derni\u00e8re fut men\u00e9e dans les ann\u00e9es 1990.
