Il se base sur les pulsations sonores qui sont r\u00e9fl\u00e9chies par des objets dans l\u2019eau et fournissent un signal de retour que l\u2019on peut interpr\u00e9ter.  <\/p>\n\n<p>En particulier, le sonar peut d\u00e9tecter des objets dont la densit\u00e9 diff\u00e8re de celle de l\u2019eau. Les parois du loch produisent une forte r\u00e9flexion, car ils sont compos\u00e9s de roche tandis que le lit silteux du loch donne une trace plus faible.  <\/p>\n\n<p>L\u2019air r\u00e9fl\u00e9chit tr\u00e8s fortement tandis que la chair a presque la m\u00eame densit\u00e9 que l\u2019eau et r\u00e9fl\u00e9chit donc faiblement. Lorsque l\u2019on cherche des animaux avec un sonar, ce sont les poumons d\u2019un mammif\u00e8re ou d\u2019un reptile, ou la vessie natatoire d\u2019un poisson qui donnent la majorit\u00e9 de la r\u00e9flexion.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Il n\u2019est pas possible de donner la taille d\u2019un objet avec le sonar, seulement sa force. Vous imaginez peut-\u00eatre que c\u2019est la m\u00eame chose, mais ce n\u2019est pas le cas. Par exemple, un homme qui nage \u00e0 travers le faisceau avec un Aqualung produirait une tr\u00e8s forte r\u00e9flexion, mais c\u2019est l\u2019Aqualung et l\u2019air emprisonn\u00e9 dans son masque et sa combinaison qui donnent la majorit\u00e9 de la r\u00e9flexion.  <\/p>\n\n<p>En 1987, lorsque l\u2019op\u00e9ration Deepscan obtint trois contacts tr\u00e8s forts, il ne fut pas possible de donner une taille en raison du fait que diff\u00e9rents animaux ont diff\u00e9rentes forces de contact.
