Columba intentara convertir a los pictos del norte al cristianismo, los moradores de esta zona cambiaron su credo pagano por el cristiano y viceversa en varias ocasiones hasta que en el siglo XVII, S. Cumin visit\u00f3 el valle. Sigui\u00f3 con la labor de S. Columba y estableci\u00f3 el cristianismo plenamente en esta parte de las Highlands.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Construy\u00f3 una iglesia aqu\u00ed y el pueblo empez\u00f3 a conocerse como Cille Chuimein o Iglesia de Cumin. Los habitantes de la zona todav\u00eda lo llaman as\u00ed y la escuela del pueblo se llama Kilcumen Academy.  Despu\u00e9s de que se diera el Levantamiento Jacobita de 1715 (los jacobitas apoyaban a la dinast\u00eda cat\u00f3lica de los Estuardo), el General George Wade construy\u00f3 una red de carreteras que ten\u00eda como centro Cille Chuimein. <\/p>\n\n<p>Tambi\u00e9n construy\u00f3 un fuerte nuevo en este lugar al que dio el nombre de Fort Augustus en honor del hijo favorito del Rey Jorge, Guillermo Augustus, duque de Cumberland. El pueblo adopt\u00f3 el nombre ingl\u00e9s de Fort Augustus en cuanto acab\u00f3 de construirse.  El fuerte era enorme y fue construido s\u00f3lidamente con cuatro baluartes muy bien defendidos en cada una de sus esquinas. Alojaba a un destacamento militar considerable.  <\/p>\n\n<p>El \u00faltimo Levantamiento Jacobita se dio en 1745 y el fuerte se entreg\u00f3 a las fuerzas jacobitas que lo hab\u00edan da\u00f1ado seriamente con fuego de ca\u00f1\u00f3n. En 1746 los jacobitas fueron derrotados y el duque de Cumberland, el hombre que hab\u00eda dado nombre al fuerte, decidi\u00f3 utilizarlo como su cuartel general, aunque hab\u00eda pasado a ser inservible. A Cumberland le enfureci\u00f3 la destrucci\u00f3n del fuerte y cometi\u00f3 muchas atrocidades contra el pueblo de las Highlands.  El fuerte no se volvi\u00f3 a construir despu\u00e9s de 1745. Lord Lovat se lo compr\u00f3 al gobierno y reconstruy\u00f3 uno de los edificios para ser usado como pabell\u00f3n de caza. En 1878 se lo entreg\u00f3 a los monjes benedictinos que construyeron la abad\u00eda contigua a los cimientos del fuerte y a los edificios que quedaban en pie. <\/p>\n\n<p>Los monjes lo utilizaron como internado hasta 1993 y como centro de visitantes hasta 1998, momento en el que era la atracci\u00f3n privada m\u00e1s visitada de Escocia.
