Funciona a base de pulsos de sonido que devuelven el reflejo de objetos que se encuentran dentro del agua que a su vez devuelven un reflejo sonoro que puede interpretarse posteriormente.  <\/p>\n\n<p>En particular, el sonar puede detectar objetos que tienen una densidad diferente a la del agua. Las paredes del agua ofrecen un reflejo claro, ya que son de piedra, mientras que la cama limosa del lago ofrece una se\u00f1al m\u00e1s tenue.  <\/p>\n\n<p>El aire queda reflejado con fuerza, mientras que la carne tiene pr\u00e1cticamente la misma densidad que el agua por lo que se refleja d\u00e9bilmente. Cuando se utiliza el sonar para buscar animales, la reflexi\u00f3n la proporcionan los pulmones de los mam\u00edferos o reptiles, o la vejiga natatoria de los peces.  <\/p>\n\n<p>El sonar no permite determinar el tama\u00f1o de un objeto, tan solo su dureza. Aunque quiz\u00e1 le parezca lo mismo, ese no es el caso; por ejemplo, un hombre nadando con una manga y equipo de buceo puede parecer muy fuerte, pero en realidad es la escafandra aut\u00f3noma y el aire que queda atrapado en la m\u00e1scara y en el traje los que ofrecen el grueso del reflejo.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Cuando la Operaci\u00f3n Deepscan de 1987 recibi\u00f3 tres se\u00f1ales muy intensas no fue posible determinar el tama\u00f1o porque la intensidad del contacto de cada animal es diferente. Una anguila, por ejemplo, no tiene alveolos en el cuerpo por lo que habr\u00eda de tener un tama\u00f1o enorme para conseguir registrarla.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Los usuarios expertos del sonar pueden hacer una estimaci\u00f3n del tama\u00f1o de los objetos gracias a su experiencia y pericia.
