Im fr\u00fchen 20. Jhdt. machte sich einer der in Fort Augustus ans\u00e4ssigen M\u00f6nche daran, mithilfe eines fr\u00fchen Tauchanzugs ihre Bauweise zu studieren. Sie weist im Fundament haupts\u00e4chlich \u00fcberkreuz angeordnete Baumst\u00e4mme auf. <\/p>\n\n<p>Der Bau hatte defensiven Charakter. Es gab auch Pikten, die ihre Behausungen auf Inseln errichteten und diese \u00fcber einen Steg mit dem Ufer verbanden. H\u00e4user wie diese hat nicht nur den Vorteil, Schutz vor wilden Tieren zu bieten und den Fischfang zu erleichtern: sie lie\u00dfen sich obendrein auch gut verteidigen. In der Regel bereitete den Angreifern schon der Zugang in die Behausung Schwierigkeiten. Meistens gaben sie sich mit Viehraub zufrieden und zogen wieder ab. Stand der Angriff einer ernst zu nehmenden Streitkraft bevor, konnte der Steg verbrannt werden und die Feinde drangen nicht einmal auf die Insel vor.    <\/p>\n\n<p>Es gibt zahlreiche Crannogs in Schottland. Mehrere davon wurden von Arch\u00e4ologen untersucht, die entlang des Verlaufs der versunkenen Stege Holzkohle entdeckten. Dies l\u00e4sst darauf schlie\u00dfen, dass die Taktik der in Brand gesteckten Stege vielfach angewandt wurde.<\/p>\n\n<p>Beim Bau des Kaledonischen Kanals wurde der Wasserspiegel um zwei Meter angehoben.
